What is Vagifem (estradiol)? 

Vagifem (estradiol) is prescription medication that is classified as an estrogen or endocrine-metabolic agent.

Uses

What is Vagifem (estradiol) used for?

It is used to treat atrophic vaginitis due to menopause.

How does it work?

It reduces the levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) through a negative feedback mechanism in postmenopausal women.

How do I take Vagifem (estradiol)?

You should take Vagifem (estradiol) as directed by your doctor. 

What dosages are available?

Vagifem (estradiol) is available in brand and generic 10 and 25mcg tablets 

What is the recommended dosage?

Generally patients will insert 1 tablet vaginally daily for 2 weeks then continue inserting 1 tablet twice weekly thereafter but take as directed by your doctor. 

What is the maximum dosage?

The maximum recommended dosage is 1.25mg/day.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is relatively close to when your next dose is due, wait until then and take a normal dose. Do not take an extra dose to make up for the missed dose.

Estrogen can increase your risk of developing gallbladder disease 

If you experience high calcium levels, loss of vision, high triglycerides, or jaundice, you should discontinue Vagifem (estradiol) 

The application process may cause abrasions to the vagina.

Patients with a thyroid disorder should have their thyroid levels checked regularly on this medication.

Per the manufacturer, Vagifem (estradiol) should dissolve slowly over a few hours after insertion.

Do you need progesterone with Vagifem (estradiol)?

As Vagifem (estradiol) is a vaginal estrogen preparation it does not require the concomitant use of progesterone as there is little systemic absorption.

You should use Estradiol as directed by your doctor, generally, the normal dosage initially is daily for 2 weeks and then you continue using 1 tablet intravaginally twice weekly thereafter.
