Livalo (Pitavastatin) is prescription medication that is classified as an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor.

What is Livalo used for? 

It is indicated for the treatment of heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia in those 8 years of age and up and primary hyperlipidemia and mixed dyslipidemia.

How does it work?

It reduces plasma cholesterol and lipoprotein concentrations by inhibition of HMG-CoA reductase and subsequent hepatic cholesterol biosynthesis in the liver. It also increases the number of liver LDL receptors on the cell surface which leads to increased absorption and catabolism of LDL.

How do I take Livalo?

Take Livalo by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor.

What should you know before you take Livalo (Pitavastatin)?

An increase in HbA1C and fasting blood glucose has been reported with use.

Caution in patients with a history of liver disease or that consume large amounts of ethanol.

Hypersensitivity reactions have been reported.

Myopathy with CPK > 10 times the upper limit of normal and potentially fatal rhabdomyolysis with or without acute renal failure secondary to myoglobinuria have been reported. The risk is dose-related and risk if increased with concurrent use of fibrates, niacin (doses of 1 g+/day), erythromycin, rifampin, or colchicine.

Stopping a statin before an operation has been associated with an increased risk of cardiac mortality and morbidity.

Caution in patients 65 years of age and up.

Caution in renal dysfunction. Dose adjustment may be needed.

• GFR > 60 mL/min/1.73m2: No dose adjustment.
• GFR 15 to 59 mL/min/1.73m2 (not receiving hemodialysis):
  • Initial: 1 mg/daily
  • Maximum: 2 mg/daily
• ESRD receiving hemodialysis:
  • Initial: 1 mg/daily
  • Maximum: 2 mg/daily

• Avoid drinking large amounts of alcohol as it can increase your risk of liver problems.
