Symbicort is not FDA approved for use in acute asthma attacks, utilize your appropriate inhaler for asthma attacks as directed by your physician.
There is a risk of Candida albicans infection of the mouth and throat while using symbicort. This risk can be mitigated by rinsing your mouth with water without swallowing after each use.
There is a potential for increased risk of pneumonia in patients with COPD, contact the appropriate healthcare provider if you begin to have symptoms of pneumonia (increased shortness of breath, fever, cough (w or w/o sputum) etc.)
There is a potential for patients receiving corticosteroids to have a reduced immunity. This correlation, however, is not sufficiently supported in patients receiving inhaled corticosteroids. The reported immunosuppressive effects of symbicort will largely be topically related in the airway where the medication acts.
If you are switching from an oral corticosteroid to Symbicort make sure you are aware of how to do so properly. Your doctor will give you specific instructions in how to do so minimizing your risk of complications.
Paradoxical Bronchospasms (worsening breathing with symbicort administration) have been reported. If you experience this type of reaction treat it immediately with your provided Short acting (emergency) inhaler. Notify your doctor of this reaction and discontinue use of Symbicort.
Symbicort has the potential to cause hypersensitivity reactions (allergic). If you have symptoms of hives, swelling of your tongue, rash, or bronchospasms associated with medication administration, notify your physician and discontinue use of symbicort.
