What is Simbrinza?

Simbrinza is a prescription medication that is classified as a combination product that contains a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor and an alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonist.

Uses

What is Simbrinza used for?

It is used to reduce elevated intraocular pressure in patients diagnosed with open-angle glaucoma and/or ocular hypertension.

How does it work? 

Brinzolamide is the carbonic anhydrase inhibitor that decreases aqueous humor secretion by slowing down the formation of bicarbonate ions. Brimonidine reduces the production of aqueous humor and increases uveoscleral outflow. The combination of these products together decrease intraocular pressure.

Directions

How do I take Simbrinza? 

Take this medication as directed by your doctor. Wash your hands before and after use and make sure not to touch the tip of the dropper to your eye. Shake the bottle well before each use to ensure the medication is properly suspended prior to administration. If you wear contact lenses, remove prior to administration and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting. If you are taking other eye drops, wait at least 5 minutes until administering.

What dosages are available?

It is available as a brand 1%/0.2% ophthalmic suspension.

What is the recommended dosage?

Typically one drop is instilled into each affected eye(s) three times daily but take as directed by your doctor.

What is the maximum dosage?

The maximum recommended dosage is 3 drops into the affected eye(s) per day.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of this medication, take your dose as soon as you remember unless it is time for your next scheduled dose. In that case, just take your scheduled dose and skip your missed dose but do not double your dose to compensate.

Warnings & Precautions

What should you know before you take Simbrinza?

There is a risk of corneal endothelium cell loss

It is not recommended in patients with a CrCl <30 mL/min (severe renal impairment) due to the lack of efficacy and safety data available in these patients
Because brinzolamide is a sulfonamide, Simbrinza may cause sulfonamide hypersensitivity reactions which can lead to serious complications such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Discontinue if a serious reaction occurs.
Bacterial keratitis may occur secondary to accidental contamination of multiple-dose ophthalmic solutions

  • Contact lenses should be removed prior to Simbrinza administration. 15 minutes post Simbrinza administration, you may reinsert lenses.
