What is Lipitor used for? 

It is indicated for the treatment of heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia in adults and pediatric patients, homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, and the prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (primary and secondary prevention).

It reduces plasma cholesterol and lipoprotein concentrations by inhibition of HMG-CoA reductase and subsequent hepatic cholesterol biosynthesis in the liver. It also increases the number of liver receptors for LDL on the cell surface which leads to increased absorption and catabolism of LDL.
