What is Combigan? 

Combigan is a prescription medication that is classified as a combination of two agents, brimonidine (alpha2 agonist) and timolol (nonselective beta-blocker).

Uses

What is Combigan used for? 

It is used for the treatment of elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with ocular hypertension or glaucoma who require adjunctive/replacement therapy due to inadequate control of IOP.

How does it work?

It decreases aqueous humor production and formation to lower intraocular pressure. It also exerts its effect by decreasing the synthesis of cyclic AMP.

How to use Combigan?

  • Before administering your Combigan, be sure to remove your contact lenses (if you wear them) prior. If you plan on reinserting your contact lenses, wait at least 15 minutes after your Combigan administration to do so. 
  • If administering other ophthalmic agents, be sure to wait at least 5 minutes or more between administrations.

What dosages are available?

Combigan comes in 0.2%/0.5%  ophthalmic solution (5mL, 10mL, 15mL). Combigan only comes as a brand name.

What is the recommended dosage?

The recommended dosage is one drop in the affected eye(s) twice a day, about 12 hours apart.

What if you miss a dose?

Take the medication as soon as possible if you have missed a dose. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return back to your regular schedule. Never double the doses.

Warnings & Precautions

What should you know before you take Combigan?

Combigan contains benzalkonium chloride. Be sure to remove your contact lenses prior to medication administration and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting your contact lenses.

Caution in patients with diabetes mellitus as it may cause hypoglycemia and/or mask the signs/symptoms.

What are the side effects of Combigan?

  • Allergic conjunctivitis, eye pruritus, burning sensation of the eyes, stinging of the eyes, follicular conjunctivitis

Avoid use with azelastine, beta2-agonists, etofylline, fexinidazole, mianserin, orphenadrine, oxomemazine, paraldehyde, rivastigmine, thalidomide, and white birch allergen extract. (Risk Category X).
