Cambia (Diclofenac) is a prescription medication that is classified as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).

Uses

What is Cambia used for?

It is used for the treatment of acute migraine attacks in adults.

How does it work?

It inhibits prostaglandin synthesis by inhibition of cyclooxygenase 1 and 2 to exert anti-inflammatory effects. Prostaglandins can sensitize afferent nerves and increase the action of bradykinin; its inhibition may explain the benefits seen in acute migraine attacks.

How do I take Cambia (Diclofenac)?

Cambia (Diclofenac) should be taken as directed by your physician. At the onset of a migraine, open 1 packet and dissolve in 1 – 2 ounces of water and drink the liquid. This medication works best on an empty stomach but since migraines are unpredictable, take at the onset of a migraine without regard for meals.

Cambia comes in single-use powder packets containing 50 mg of diclofenac potassium.

Warnings & Precautions

What should you know before you take Cambia (Diclofenac)?

Hepatotoxicity has been reported in patients taking this medication. This medication may be discontinued if your doctor observes abnormal liver function tests.

Patients taking antihypertensives may experience less anti-hypertensive effects when taking with NSAIDs. Measure blood pressure regularly to ensure it is controlled.

Do not take if you have severe heart failure unless you have approval from your doctor.

There is a risk of renal toxicity when using this medication especially in patients with renal or hepatic impairment, heart failure, dehydration, or hypovolemia.

Anaphylaxis reactions have been reported in patients taking this medication.

Should not be used in patients with aspirin-sensitive asthma. Extra monitoring may be needed in patients with asthma.

Discontinue if a rash appears after using this medication.

Taking this medication too frequently may cause medication-overuse headaches. If using more than 7 times per month or more than 2 – 3 times per week, let your doctor know.

Hemoglobin and hematocrit may need to be monitored in patients at risk or presenting with signs and symptoms of anemia

May affect the efficacy and antihypertensive effects of loop and thiazide diuretics

Concomitant use with digoxin may increase digoxin’s half-life. Use with caution and regularly monitor digoxin concentrations.
