Azopt is a prescription medication that is classified as a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor.

It is used for the treatment of elevated intraocular pressure in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension

How does it work?

By inhibiting carbonic anhydrase, aqueous humor secretion is decreased. This reduces sodium and fluid transport thus decreasing intraocular pressure.

How to take Azopt?

Before administration, make sure to shake well. If you wear contacts, make sure to remove your contacts prior to the medication administration. If you are planning on using more than one topical ophthalmic drug, administer the drugs at least 10 minutes apart.

Avoid touching the tip of the dispensing container to the eye or any surrounding structures to avoid contamination.

What if I miss a dose?

What should you know before you take Azopt?

Vision may be temporarily blurred, which can impair physical/mental abilities. Patients should be cautioned about performing tasks requiring mental alertness, such as driving.

Sulfonamide “sulfa” allergy.

Use in patients with severe renal impairment is not recommended and has not been studied.

The product may contain benzalkonium chloride, which can be absorbed by soft contact lenses. Patients should be instructed to remove their contact lenses prior to medication administration and wait for at least 15 minutes before re-inserting the lenses back.

• Write down the date that you open your bottle. Throw your Azopt away even if there is medication left over after 4 weeks from the open date.
